Important Changes in 2018

Includes a change in hours and adoption fees

At the Great River Rescue Board of Directors meeting on December 7, 2017 a few important changes were approved for the coming year. These changes were thoughtfully considered by the Board and me for several months leading up to the meeting. All of the changes are a response to increased expenses faced by the organization threatening its survival.

First, dog and cat adoption fees will be raised for the first time in many years. Dog adoption fees will be raised from $175 to $185.40 ($200 including tax) and cat adoption fees will be raised to $92.70 ($100 including tax). These fees are still incredibly reasonable considering the investment that GRR makes in every pet. For example, it costs the organization $81 to spay a female cat, while the adoption fee has only been $75. The increase will not cover all the costs of caring for each animal, but will reduce the gap a bit. Additionally, microchip insertion fees will be increased from $18.54 to $23.70.

The other major change approved was to reduce shelter hours on Saturday by one hour. Therefore, the shelter will be open to the public from 12:30 to 4:30 pm instead of 5:30 pm. This change was approved despite feedback from the public requesting more hours open to the public. However, the more hours the shelter is open, the greater the payroll costs. This modest decrease will save some expenditure in the area of payroll.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding of these changes. Please know that we will always strive to do what is best for the pets.
