If you would like to make an appointment to visit a cat, please click the blue Book Now button and make an appointment on the calendar. Once you have made an appointment, complete and submit an Adoption Application prior to your appointment. If there is an asterisk by an answer box that is not applicable to your circumstance, please put N/A in the box.
Please note that completion of the application does not guarantee the adoption will be approved. Completing the application does not hold the animal for you, so someone with an appointment prior to yours can adopt them.
Medical Treatment:
Great River Rescue is committed to adopting out animals in good faith. All known medical, physical, behavioral conditions, and special needs have been disclosed to the prospective adopter. Any costs incurred relating to any disclosed or pre-existing condition are the adopter’s responsibility as of the date of adoption.
Special Needs Adoptions:
Some of our animals are listed as “special needs pets.” These animals may have behavior or health issues, or maybe they have just been at the shelter for an extended period of time. These animals are available at a discount because of our Special Needs Fund which offsets the cost of the adoption.
Adoption Deposits:
If you meet an animal that you want to adopt, and can’t take them that day, need time to prepare, or even just need time to think about your adoption, please contact the shelter to discuss making a deposit to hold.
The Cost of Adopting:
Yes, Great River Rescue charges an adoption fee. But, did you know that we lose money with every adoption? Did you know that we receive NO funding from the city or county to help care for companion animals? On average, we spend about $750 on every animal that we help. That means that we lose money with every adoption! We depend on the support of our community members to continue to provide the best care possible for all animals in need.
Appointments are Prioritized and Preferred
An appointment is needed to make sure the pet or pets you are wanting to visit will be at the shelter at that time.
Dog meet and greets must have a scheduled appointment.
Due to the high volume of daily scheduled appointments and activities at the shelter, we are rarely able to accommodate unscheduled pet visits – we appreciate you understanding that we may not be able to let you visit pets without an appointment.
Appointments made the day of the appointment, and people who walk-in without an appointment, will not be able to adopt that same day.
Thank you for understanding!
